Age: (almost) 27

Relationship Status:  Single

Occupation:  Musician/writer

Astrological Sign: Virgo sun, Sagittarius moon, Cancer rising.

What is the first thing you do when you wake up?

Recently, unfortunately, I check my phone. It’s easier for me to read first thing when I’m at home, but I’ve been touring a lot and I use my phone as my alarm clock on the road. Hard to put it back down.

Have you ever felt genuine fulfillment? When?

Every time I’ve ever heard an audience sing my own lyrics back to me.

What is your most repetitive, negative thought?

Whenever I see a beautiful girl on the Internet, I have this terrible habit of wondering whether my exes would think she’s prettier than me.

What is your most repetitive, positive thought?

That I have a truly remarkable and brilliant creative mind.

What is one thing that surprised you about adulthood?

So much laundry. So many dishes.

What are three things you want to put every woman onto?

1. Clip-on hoop earrings for those of us who could never hack it with pierced ears.

2. The knowledge that almost nothing is mandatory, and if you want to leave a party or a friendship or a relationship that is not serving you, you are allowed to go whenever you want for any reason.

3. Destigmatizing pads. Pads over tampons every day, baby.

Rank the following from most to least important:

money, food, sex, love, and laughter (feel free to explain or don’t).

1. Love

2. Laughter

3. Money

4. Sex

5. Food

How has your relationship with your parents/ guardians changed in adulthood?

My parents really let me be a kid my whole childhood, but now that I’m a real adult, they confide in me and ask for my advice. I’m so grateful that they respect my opinion so much and ever want to seek my guidance.

When do you feel most like yourself?

When I’m writing. When I’m spending time with my family. When I’m falling in love.

What is the best compliment someone has ever given you?

Five years ago, I was talking to an acquaintance about Boy Meets World, and I mentioned how I wished I was Topanga, and she said, “You have big Topanga energy.”

How do you feel about falling in love?

It’s nauseating and exhilarating, and I can’t wait to do it again (and again, and again…however many tries it takes!)

What is one thing you’re sick of hearing?

Anything that has to do with encouraging people to do things alone. It takes a village. You should never be ashamed to ask for help.

How often do you feel alone?

Often. I live alone. And tour can be lonely, too. I require a lot of downtime to decompress from the emotional labor of being onstage, but I probably overdo it and isolate myself from the rest of my touring party a little too much.

What is one thing you hope everyone experiences in their lifetime?

Gratitude for their physical health while they have it. It can be ripped away from you at any moment, and you may spend the rest of your life trying to adapt.

What is one thing you hope no one has to experience in their lifetime?

Incurable chronic illness.

What is the best decision you’ve ever made?

Leaving my first boyfriend, who was abusive.

When do you feel most at ease?

The days after achieving a big professional milestone, like releasing a project or finishing a tour, are when I can allow myself at least 24 hours to not plan or worry about what’s next and just focus on how proud I am of myself.

What does having a successful life mean to you?

Making all of your decisions for the approval of your five-year-old self and/or your seventy-five-year-old self.

How often do you think about your body?

I’m a hypochondriac, so unfortunately, I’m always checking my body for symptoms. It’s something I’m working on.

When do you ask for help?

All the time in creative settings. It’s so important to know your strengths and weaknesses and to be aware of your limitations. I imagine that’s true in every profession, but especially in music. I used to call my mom to ask for help doing basically everything related to adulthood, but I’m a lot better at that now.

What is something you feel strongly about?

Clean air is as much a human right as clean water. Future generations will look back at our carelessness and apathy towards illness, the same way we look at past generations who didn’t wear seatbelts and allowed drunk driving.

BONUS: Tell me something good.

One of my agents is having a baby soon! I love babies so much. Every time someone tells me they’re having a baby, I start crying even if I barely know them.
