Writer: Devyn Penney Devyn Penney

Age: 26

Relationship Status:  In a relationship

Occupation:  Attorney (upon passage of bar)

Astrological Sign: Gemini sun, virgo moon, and virgo rising

What is the first thing you do when you wake up?

Open my bedroom window and check the forecast. Stretch!

Have you ever felt genuine fulfillment? When?

On my drive home from work or after with friends. I am genuinely fulfilled, for better or worse, when I feel a sense of personal accomplishment in my work or through the social connections throughout the day.

What is your most repetitive, negative thought?

“Am I doing this right?”

What is your most repetitive, positive thought?

“I am loved and am capable of doing this.”

What is one thing that surprised you about adulthood?

The disparity of wealth and opportunity, which is dependent on various factors outside of our control, is mind-boggling.

What are three things you want to put every woman onto?

  1. There is no one else in the world like you. What a powerful thing!

  2. Sign a prenuptial agreement. If that’s not your thing, make sure you have an accurate accounting of your individual assets and debts.

  3. A five-minute walk is better than no walk.

How has your relationship with your parents/ guardians changed in adulthood?

Realizing that my parents are also navigating the world for the first time.

When do you feel most like yourself?

Laughing with my partner. Facetiming my siblings. Singing to musical theatre in my car on the way to work. Being a part of a team.

What is the best compliment someone has ever given you?

You are elegant. You are calm (reader: I am not!).

How do you feel about falling in love?

It has been the greatest surprise of my life thus far.

What is one thing you’re sick of hearing?

"You are going to pass the bar." It’s well-intended, but so many people smarter than me have failed. But dumber people than me have passed, too.

How often do you feel alone?

Not too often, unless I have not had dinner yet.

What is one thing you hope everyone experiences in their lifetime?

A surprise, thoughtful gesture from someone in their life that is perfectly tailored to their interests or desires. Whether it’s a cookie or a grant for a research fund they’ve always wanted, I believe small gestures matter and are impactful.

What is one thing you hope no one has to experience in their lifetime?

A bad haircut.

What is the best decision you’ve ever made?

Attending college out-of-state.

When do you feel most at ease?

A completed to-do list. My phone on “Do not disturb.”

What does having a successful life mean to you?

For my season of life right now: a manageable routine with built-in variety working toward daily/monthly/yearly goals. For future-me: not necessarily “having it all,” but having the means to outsource certain tasks and responsibilities to “have it all.”

How often do you think about your body?

9 times out of 10.

When do you ask for help?

Right before I feel the weight of responsibilities about to burst.

What is something you feel strongly about?

Buy the candy. The NYT mini crossword is the best way to start the day.

BONUS: Tell me something good.

Procter & Gamble (P&G) runs the ‘Thank You, Mom’ advertisements during the Olympic Games. They are available on YouTube and never fail to make me cry happy tears.
