What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
Check my phone (I’m ashamed to admit) and wash my face!
Have you ever felt genuine fulfillment? When?
Yes, when I am doing mundane things on my own, things like reading at the park, going to the farmer’s market, or watching football at the bar alone, it always brings me a sense of contentment.
What is your most repetitive, negative thought?
I’m terrified I will never experience wholehearted, genuine, romantic love.
What is your most repetitive, positive thought?
I am so lucky to live the life that I live. I love the people around me, the experiences I have, what I do, and where I’m at.
What is one thing that surprised you about adulthood?
People aren’t excited about things!! I know the world we live in can be really hard, but it’s exciting to be excited! And ignoring fun or happy stuff doesn’t make the shitty stuff go away. I wish more adults would let themselves be joyful about things, big or small.
What are three things you want to put every woman onto?
Becoming friends with your friend's significant others. I think this might be a hot take, but it has been such a blessing in my life.
Getting a bob. or bangs. Or both. Or whatever haircut you’ve been scared of.
Putting lime in your diet coke!!
Rank the following from most to least important:
money, food, sex, love, and laughter (feel free to explain or don’t).
Love, laughter, food, sex, money. To me, there is no love without laughter and vice versa, but if I really had to settle on one being above the other, it would be love on top.
How has your relationship with your parents/ guardians changed in adulthood?
I’ve realized that we are separate people with separate lives. They are so much more than my mom and my dad. I also have learned that it’s okay to do or say things they may not approve of or agree with. As the oldest child and recovering people-pleaser, this has sometimes been really hard to come to terms with.
When do you feel most like yourself?
When I’m laughing so hard I can’t breathe. Bonus points if it’s really late at night on the couch with my mom or my best friends.
What is the best compliment someone has ever given you?
A teenage girl recently told me that I was so good at being myself that it made her want to be herself. That one meant a lot to me.
How do you feel about falling in love?
I want it to happen so desperately…I’m honestly ashamed to admit that.
What is one thing you’re sick of hearing?
I get really exhausted listening to people brush off inherent misogyny/racism/homophobia. These things are so ingrained in our society, and too many people think that because discrimination isn’t always obvious, it must not exist.
How often do you feel alone?
Anytime I am in a group setting where everyone else has a significant other.
What is one thing you hope everyone experiences in their lifetime?
Having deep, meaningful friendships. There is no love like platonic love between women.
What is one thing you hope no one has to experience in their lifetime?
Realizing that you can be a really shitty person and you sometimes let people down. Unfortunately, I also think that this is unavoidable in life.
What is the best decision you’ve ever made?
Moving away from home. It was something I always wanted growing up, but actually doing it was so much better for me than I expected.
When do you feel most at ease?
The first 24 hours after a big assignment, test, deadline, etc. Something about knowing that it’s done and being able to indulge in whatever I like without any guilt is really freeing.
What does having a successful life mean to you?
Success to me means building community, loving as many people as possible, seeing and experiencing as many things as possible, and finding joy in everything I do.
How often do you think about your body?
More than I should.
When do you ask for help?
When I feel completely and totally lost. When I have no idea how to fix it myself.
What is something you feel strongly about?
Everyone should experience being truly happy alone or without a significant other. There is so much value in contentment as a single person, but I think the pressure and desire to have a significant other cloud this at times.
BONUS: Tell me something good.
No matter what you’re thinking or feeling, there’s probably a Taylor Swift song for it.
