What is the most important part of your daily routine?
Everyone says not to check your phone, but the first thing I do is check the news and Twitter. I cannot walk around and be oblivious to what is happening around us. It brings me both gratitude and awareness and can make my problems feel like next to nothing. When big things happen, hardly anyone knows about them if they do not read the news; it makes me realize many things about our society.
What is your current happiness most dependent on?
Ensuring that peace and love are oozing through my home. I grew up in a dysfunctional home where we moved around a lot and were homeless for a few years. I had to share a room with my mother and my two younger siblings, and due to constant moving, I never had the chance to decorate my room with posters or paint it. Now, being married and luckily having an amazing partner who lets me go crazy, I can do things like play my music on my speaker, decorate my walls with memorabilia, and showcase all my favorite books. Honestly, it has been healing my inner child, and I love it!
What do you wish you were less reliant on?
Smoking Ciggies is such a bad habit of mine that I wish I could kick it. Anytime I do quit, with any sign of stress, you’ll find me purchasing it at my corner store - the cashier has them out before I even request them. It's weird; I know it causes more harm than good. If I want to lose weight and one day start a family, I know this could decrease my chances of achieving those targets, but at the same time, it is what it is.
When do you question yourself?
I have imposter Syndrome at work - it's the worst!
What is something that has positively impacted how you perceive your self-worth?
This is a journey that I’m still on. I grew up watching every movie you can think of, especially romantic comedy movies and female lead movies. some of my favorites are Clueless, Cheetah Girls (Disney child over here), Pursuit of Happiness, and Precious. These types of movies made me understand what self-worth is and why it’s important to have positive hopes and dreams for yourself so that you will never accept anything lower.
What is something you have forgiven yourself for?
I let my trauma consume so much at one point that I did not have space for anything good. I was in destruction mode during my college years, but looking back at it, I truly think it was something that I needed to express and feel. I guess once you hit rock bottom the only way is up.
What is something you have forgiven someone else for?
My older brother for inflicting all of those traumatic moments. Now that I'm in therapy, I’ve had to forgive him to move on from my anger. Anger can be a funny thing. Sometimes, it is so intense that it’s all you see in the world, but I want peace, love, fulfillment, and hope.
How do you ground/center yourself?
I love playing my music on my speaker and having a long steaming hot shower, doing my curly hair routine, exfoliating my skin and coming out brand new!
What is one thing that helped you through your most difficult time?
Friends and Family; anyone I feel a connection with, and who it doesn't feel like I’m not trauma dumping on. I’m so lucky to have my older sister, who is my half-sister, but only one paper. She’s my rock, my confidant, and is everything to me. I always hated how my mother tried to keep us separated and even banned me from seeing her, but when someone is supposed to be in your life, nothing will get in the way. I hope everyone has someone like that.
Have you ever felt like the best version of yourself? When?
When my makeup is nice, my body looks snatched, my outfit is 10/10, and I have a photo to capture it all, that is when I’m feeling like the best version of myself.
What is something you fundamentally disagree with?
The Death Penalty. Who are we to decide if another human should live or not? I feel the same way about War and Genocide.
What is something you know for sure?
It's corny, but this life is only temporary and knowing that information and having that front in your mind puts everything in perspective.
What are three of your non-negotiables in romantic relationships?
1. Date night every week and taking turns planning them!
2. Speak up about anything that is bothering you before it eats you.
3. Find out your partner's love language; it might be different from yours.
When do you feel most comfortable in your own skin?
I’m super grateful to say, but all the time.
Have you ever been in awe of something/someone? When?
My sister is so giving and a great friend to others. She would be one to host your surprise bridal shower all by herself (she took me to Barcelona). She will be the first person to see you at the hospital. One to give you money in time of need and donate money to charity. She is just too good to be true, and it warms my heart to know I have her as a sister.
What is the best (physical/material) gift you have ever received?
My engagement ring and Wedding ring. My engagement ring is an aquamarine and gold ring with small diamonds around it, in a floral shape and my wedding ring is a vintage find from 1920.
What is one thing you wish you had said ‘yes’ to in the past?
I was offered to do my Teacher Training course for free at the school where I was working, but sadly, I was moving away to another county. No school in my new area would extend that offer.
What is one thing you will always say ‘no’ to in the future?
To do work at home after office hours! Unless I’m getting paid, the answer will be NO.
What do you believe is your most attractive quality?
I like to think I'm kind, and other people can see that in me. I find kindness to be an attractive quality in others.
What/who do you want to be when you grow up?
Someone who can go outside her comfort zone more often and do things that she has only seen in movies.
BONUS: Tell me something good.
Put vanilla protein powder in your pancake batter !! Your world will change forever.
