Writer: Devyn Penney Devyn Penney

Age: 28

Relationship Status:  Single

Occupation:  Dietitian

Income:  We never really know lol

Astrological Sign: Virgo sun, Gemini rising, Gemini moon

What is the first thing you do when you wake up?

Immediately check the time. I have the luxury of not having to set an alarm, and I am trying to get into a better circadian rhythm, but I still have that panic set in, like “Oh my god, I slept until ten” (and it’s legit 7 AM every time).

Have you ever felt genuine fulfillment? When?

Yes. When I was younger, my neighborhood would fundraise and buy Christmas presents for families who couldn’t afford to give their kids gifts. One year, something got messed up in the transportation process for the gifts (they were all stored at my house). On Christmas Eve, my dad and I drove to a trailer park late at night while the kids were sleeping and dropped off a ton of toys to a single mom. It was one of the only moments when I have felt genuinely fulfilled.

What is your most repetitive, negative thought?

I struggle a lot with my body image (if we are being so real, most dietitians do, but we can’t talk about it). I try not to nitpick it, but you know how it goes.

What is your most repetitive, positive thought?

I can do this.

What is one thing that surprised you about adulthood?

The cleaning. It never fucking ends.

What are three things you want to put every woman onto?

  1. Glow Screen from Supergoop. I get complimented on my skin all the time, and this has always been my base. I have been using it for like seven years!

  2. Omega 9 Hair Mask from Rahua. This one is pricey, but the only hair mask that has ever made a difference for me.

  3. The Blue Agave Sriracha from Yellowbird. I have not shut up about this for weeks.

Rank the following from most to least important:

money, food, sex, love, and laughter (feel free to explain or don’t).

Love

Laughter

Food

Sex

Money

How has your relationship with your parents/ guardians changed in adulthood?

I think I am smarter than them now, lol. I might not be, but I tend to think I am.

When do you feel most like yourself?

Alone, with my coffee in the morning. It’s my favorite time of day.

What is the best compliment someone has ever given you?

A masseuse in Jamaica told me she loved my energy and that I receive energy well. I think your energy is the most important thing.

How do you feel about falling in love?

Unbelievably scared, but I want it to happen.

What is one thing you’re sick of hearing?

People telling me what I should and should not be doing with my career.

How often do you feel alone?

Honestly, not often. I love being physically alone, but I have an amazing support system of friends. I know I am never truly emotionally alone. I also have a cat.

What is one thing you hope everyone experiences in their lifetime?

I hope everyone experiences true, authentic, unconditional friendship. It has saved me so many times. Also, a social media detox.

What is one thing you hope no one has to experience in their lifetime?

Letting a dumb fucking frat boy make them feel like less than. They’re such losers; please just let that go, lol.

What is the best decision you’ve ever made?

Blocking said dumb fucking frat boy.

When do you feel most at ease?

A clean apartment, face mask on, tea in hand, watching Summer House.

What does having a successful life mean to you?

I think my idea of success really is finding freedom. Being able to do what I want when I want.

How often do you think about your body?

A lot.

When do you ask for help?

Usually, when it has reached the point of no return (this is not advice and definitely something no one else should do).

What is something you feel strongly about?

Please, please, please leave people behind who treat you poorly. I spent so much time begging people to be in my life, and everything got so much better when they were out of it. This goes for family members, friends, and significant others. Trust me, the sooner you do that, the better.

BONUS: Tell me something good.

I got a great perspective on a recent trip from a celebrity yoga teacher/ trainer. She told me that “Humans are the only species that are constantly looking for an answer when there isn’t one.” Basically, this is all made up! So do whatever you want. Have fun with your friends, text your mom, eat at your favorite restaurant - it’s all good, baby!
