What is your first thought every morning?

Is the baby up?

What is something you do solely for you?

Spend time with my best friends. I am so lucky that they love me for me, and every time I hang out with them, I leave feeling a thousand pounds lighter.

What is something you dread?

Losing my dog. I think about it way too much.

What is something you are looking forward to?

The autumn season with my daughter - it is her first one, and she is the most magical age. I’m going to DIY a family Halloween costume, wish me luck!

When do you feel most accomplished?

After helping someone. Or when I finish cleaning the house and light a candle.

What is something you regret investing in financially?

Dresses for my brother’s wedding, and then not returning them in time. I have over $1,000 in store credit at Revolve that I’m chipping away at. Don’t tell my husband!

What is something you regret investing in emotionally?

Usually, work. It’s just not worth it. Also, TV shows that get canceled, or the writing falls off. I could write a dissertation about Grey’s Anatomy.

What are three things you think are absolutely worth the investment?

(financially, emotionally, or time/energy-wise)

1. Your health is number one, no question. Physical, mental & spiritual.

2. Your relationships with others. This will connect you to the world and carry you through life.

3. Your environment. Personally, I think people underestimate how their space impacts them. Clean it up and make it your own.

When do you feel most creative?

When I’m writing.

How often do you compare yourself to others? When?

I never used to, like ever. I was very happy with myself. Since becoming a mom, I compare myself to other moms, and how my baby compares to others developmentally all the time. I have had to really examine it. It’s wild!

What is one thing you’d like to thank your past self for?

Working hard to get myself into a decent position in life. I have experienced many privileges but have also put in a lot of work to be where I am, and I am thankful to little me for being so tenacious with our goals.

What is one thing you believe about your future self?

She will be wise.

What is one thing you learned in childhood that you have now had to unlearn in adulthood?

To be overly nice, accommodating, and a pleasure for people, even at the expense of myself. Unlearning this has been incredibly liberating.

Have you ever felt pure joy? When?

A good laugh with my husband. The sound my daughter makes when she is happy. Friday at 5 o’clock. The first sip of morning coffee. The perfect thrifting find. My sister calling with really good gossip. When my dog and cat snuggle. Lake Michigan.

What is something that would feel really good to get off your chest?

I need to tell my mom that I am not angry with her, I am proud of her. Why is that so hard to say?

When do you feel most in your feminine energy?

Hosting a party and pulling out all the stops! I watched my mom do it all my life, and she told stories of watching my grandma throw extravagant dinner parties in the 60s. My mother-in-law is also amazing at this. I think of them while I’m preparing and feel connected to all these women before me.

What is one interaction that changed your life?

I once saw a Holocaust survivor speak at a museum and was very moved by her story. Afterward, I was crying in the bathroom, and she came in. She held my face in her hands and said, “It is beautiful to feel.”

What is something you want to give up?

Smoking weed. I love it, but I think I have outgrown it.

What is something you want to take up?

I’d love to learn French.

What do you believe is a universal truth?

Change is the only constant thing in life.

BONUS: Tell me something good.

I was recently diagnosed with postpartum depression, and these questions prompted me to actually start taking my medication. I was scared to, but I feel so much better. Something about this really made me take a look at myself and who I want to be, and for that, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
