What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
I often snooze my alarm multiple times, check my messages, and then get ready for work.
Have you ever felt genuine fulfillment? When?
Yes, I felt genuine fulfillment when I visited Greece surrounded by my family after a near-death experience. I underwent three brain surgeries and a stroke, and I didn't know if I’d make it to Greece. Being there, surrounded by family, eating amazing food, and drinking cocktails while reflecting on what I had been through, brought me immense fulfillment.
What is your most repetitive, negative thought?
I frequently oscillate between several negative thoughts:
My body doesn’t look good. I need to lose body fat to be happy and find love.
I’m going to be alone for the rest of my life because I’ll never be good enough for anyone. My body will never be good enough for a man to love me.
No one will ever want to marry me or have children with me.
I’ll always be the fun aunt who never found anyone to love her.
What is your most repetitive, positive thought?
I am more determined than anyone I know and always go above and beyond for the people I love.
What is one thing that surprised you about adulthood?
Life isn’t fair, no matter how good of a person you are.
What are three things you want to put every woman onto?
Strength training (getting “too bulky” isn’t a thing). Your 80-year-old self will thank you.
Wearing SPF every day.
Using retinol.
Rank the following from most to least important: money, food, sex, love, and laughter.
(feel free to explain, or don’t).
Love, laughter, food, money, sex.
Love, laughter, and food will always fill your cup. You can still feel empty with unlimited money and sex.
How has your relationship with your parents/guardians changed in adulthood?
I've learned to seek logical and practical support from my mom and emotional support from my dad to feel less disappointment. My relationship with them has evolved to where I now have my own voice while understanding that they are also living their lives for the first time and don’t know everything.
When do you feel most like yourself?
I feel myself when I’m with people who allow me to be my silliest self, laughing until I can’t breathe, bringing out my inner child.
What is the best compliment someone has ever given you?
When I was five years old, my mom told me, "You have a heart of gold." I have carried that through adulthood, into my career and relationships.
How do you feel about falling in love?
I feel terrified. I deeply want to be in love again, but I fear getting my heart broken or being fully seen and not being loved in return.
What is one thing you’re sick of hearing?
"You will find someone when you stop looking." This often comes from people in happy, long-term relationships and lacks any real logic.
How often do you feel alone?
Every day.
What is one thing you hope everyone experiences in their lifetime?
Gratitude. Having a near-death experience or losing life's little privileges has taught me to be grateful for small things. Appreciate being able to touch grass, sing at the top of your lungs, and even just stand up.
What is one thing you hope no one has to experience in their lifetime?
The loss of freedom, finances, and movement. Illness can take you to the depths of darkness. A more niche answer would be hearing a mother scream when her children are removed from her care, which is harrowing.
What is the best decision you’ve ever made?
Leaving an abusive partner. I thought I’d never be happy again without him, but my world opened up in ways I never imagined. Staying would have made me miserable and deprived me of the life experiences I now cherish.
When do you feel most at ease?
Never. I am always overthinking and planning the next thing I need to accomplish.
What does having a successful life mean to you?
Being surrounded by love, family, and good food and a healthy relationship.
How often do you think about your body?
Every second of every day. My body has fought to stay alive for me, and yet I still struggle with self-acceptance.
When do you ask for help?
I ask for help when I’m overwhelmed, typically calling my mom or dad only once things reach a boiling point.
What is something you feel strongly about?
If you get hit by a car tomorrow and might never see your family again, you won’t care about buying your first home, making $100k+ a year, eating too many calories on a Saturday, or what fucking Abbey from high school thinks of your success. Life is precious and fleeting. Move your body, travel the world, kiss people, eat food that nourishes your soul, and tell people you love them. It all can be taken away in a second.
BONUS: Tell me something good.
I survived having a stroke at 24 years old. I’m here to see my brother’s baby be born, I am here with amazing friends and family, I am here to lift heavy weights, and run for hours. I’m here to help others who are struggling. I am here!
