Income: Enough to support myself and plan for the future
What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
I listen to NPR Up First while I have my first cup of coffee. It makes me feel like a productive human when I start my day off educating myself on what’s happening in the world.
Have you ever felt genuine fulfillment? When?
I’ve gotten doses of fulfillment in my life, but I am still figuring out what would bring me genuine fulfillment.
What is your most repetitive, negative thought?
I am failing the expectations people have of me.
What is your most repetitive, positive thought?
“I am the rock in which the wave crashes against.” It’s adapted from a book series I finished a few months ago (shoutout to my fellow SJM girlies). I repeat this in my head whenever I am feeling overwhelmed, and it makes me feel physically/mentally stronger.
What is one thing that surprised you about adulthood?
Nobody cares what you do! Not in a negative way, but in a liberating way. Nobody will care if you didn’t get straight A’s in school or you haven’t watched that one show everyone is talking about. Or if you haven’t gotten around to cleaning out the boxes in your closet because it is too overwhelming. Do what you can to your best ability and do what makes you happy, as long as you are not harming yourself or others in the process.
What are three things you want to put every woman onto?
Odele hair products: I have really unruly, sort of curly sort of wavy, thick hair that makes me want to cry some days because it is so hard to style. The smoothing shampoo/conditioner and leave-in conditioner have really helped! These are also drug- store priced, which is a plus!
Revitalash Serum: So pricey but SO worth it for the results. I have always been insecure about my eyelashes being so short, and after a month of use I have already gotten comments about how they look longer!
Create!! Your body and mind are so much more capable than you know. Whether that is cooking, singing, dancing, painting, writing, or just creating JOY. It is so fulfilling to put your work out into the universe.
Rank the following from most to least important:
money, food, sex, love, and laughter (feel free to explain or don’t).
Laughter
Love
Sex
Food
Money
How has your relationship with your parents/ guardians changed in adulthood?
I’ve come to realize my parents are just more grown up grown-ups. Everything they do in their life has stemmed from their own lived experiences, and I have only been around to see 21 years of those moments. I can see their strengths and flaws more clearly as I move through my own journey of adulthood.
When do you feel most like yourself?
When I am with my friends from high school. They have known me since I was 14 and have seen me at my highest and lowest. I know that I can always be myself without judgement from them and that is such a liberating feeling.
What is the best compliment someone has ever given you?
That I’m the funniest person they know. Knowing that I can make someone laugh from something my silly brain finds funny brings me a lot of joy. I’ve also been told I make the best stove-popped popcorn.
How do you feel about falling in love?
It scares me more than I’d like to admit. I’ve always been a hyper-independent person and the idea of letting someone into my world, my feelings, and my mind is very anxiety-inducing to me. At the same time, I am so excited to fall in love with the right person because I know that I am worth all of that. I’ve had failed situationships, and while those were disappointing, they reaffirmed my position that what is meant to will be, and I just have to remain hopeful.
What is one thing you’re sick of hearing?
It’ll happen when it is right for you. It is so true but damn it is a pain to hear!!
How often do you feel alone?
I’ve been feeling more alone lately. I think it is the stage of early adulthood when people graduate, move, fall in love, get their first big jobs, etc. Everything is so dynamic and always changing- sometimes it’s isolating feeling like I am walking on a path by myself. I do know at the end of the day I have a great group of friends and family behind me that will support me no matter what and I am very lucky for that.
What is one thing you hope everyone experiences in their lifetime?
A debrief after a night out with your best friends that makes you laugh so hard you’re gasping for air. Hopefully, that debrief ends with Taco Bell shortly after.
What is one thing you hope no one has to experience in their lifetime?
Misophonia- It drives me crazy being so affected by the slightest noise like someone chewing.
What is the best decision you’ve ever made?
Transferring schools after my freshman year of college. I go back and forth as to whether the school I ended up going to was actually the right one for me. What I do know is that because I transferred, I was exposed to so much more culture, wisdom, and driven people than I would have ever expected from my time in college.
When do you feel most at ease?
Watching a movie in my pajamas while it is thunder storming.
What does having a successful life mean to you?
Having real work/life balance. I want to be able to come home from a fulfilling job and have the capacity to experience life with friends and family.
How often do you think about your body?
Every. Day. I often look at pictures from when I was seventeen and beat myself up because I don’t look the same. Spoiler: I don’t look the same as I did when I had a faster metabolism, played competitive sports for hours a day, and wasn’t going out for drinks with friends! Some days I look in the mirror thinking I look great, other days I want to cry. I need to remind myself that my body is powerful and has gotten me through all of my paths in life (literally!).
When do you ask for help?
Rarely ever (eldest daughter syndrome).
What is something you feel strongly about?
Everyone should register to vote. It doesn’t matter where you fall on the ideological spectrum: your vote has power.
BONUS: Tell me something good.
We are halfway through 2024 (thank goodness)!!
